Marvel bosses talk new ‘less is more’ approach and hint at Ryan Reynolds’ and Shawn Levy’s MCU future

Look, there’s been some great Marvel movies since Avengers: Endgame but you’re deluding yourself if you try to say the MCU has been as great as it was in the first couple of phases…

But don’t just take my word for it.

Louis D’Esposito, Co-President of Marvel Studios, above, in a new interview has been talking about how Marvel has fallen out of favour in the last few years and how it might be a good thing and there’s a plan to get them back where they belong… on top: “If we just stayed on top, that would have been the worst thing that could have happened to us,” he says.

Looking forward to July’s release – and Marvel’s only big screen out this year – of Deadpool & Wolvereine, he sees things about to pick up again and it’s hard to argue that the anticipation of Hugh Jackman’s first appearance in the MCU (not to mention Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool coming over too) has fans frothing at the mouth: “We took a little hit, we’re coming back strong,”  D’Esposito says.

“Maybe when you do too much, you dilute yourself a little bit. We’re not going to do that anymore. We learned our lesson. Maybe two to three films a year and one or two shows, as opposed to doing four films and four shows.”

The mere fact that we’re at a stage where three movies and two shows isn’t ‘too much’ speaks volumes, doesn’t it?

Marvel boss Kevin Feige sees it all as being an exciting challenge and, with just the one movie out this year, a chance to regroup and come back strong: “I’m much more comfortable being the underdog. I prefer being able to surprise, and exceed expectations. So it does seem like the last year, which has not been ideal, has set us up well for that.”

Feige goes on to hint that perhaps Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy might have a role to play in the MCU’s wider future after their work on Deadpool & Wolverine: “Some of the lines that Ryan and his writers and Shawn worked on have taken on more of a meaning,” says Feige while Levy has the final word, saying of the MCU’s recent output: “You’d have to live under a rock not to know that the last few Marvel movies have failed to ignite the world in the way that so many did.

WATCH: At last! The trailer for Deadpool 3 AKA Deadpool & Wolverine is here!

“We do come along at an interesting time. And we are decidedly something different. Whether it is of Messianic proportions, time will tell.”

Hmmmmmmm… I’d expect to see Reynolds’ and Levy’s fingerprints on much more of the future of the MCU, just as we all believed a few years back that James Gunn’s would be.

Let me know what you all think about this, can Deadpool and Wolverine re-light the MCU’s fire? Would you like to see Reynolds and Levy playing a bigger role in the MCU in the future? Let me know…
